The start of watermelon season trials is Rod Jorgensen’s favorite time of year.
“For me, the first good watermelon of the year is like the beginning of summer. It’s nice to be in the first field where the maturity is right on,” says the 35-year veteran of the seed industry. Jorgensen is the Eastern Area Sales Manager for Enza Zaden USA, and he is extremely proud of how the company’s watermelon program has evolved over the past few years.
“We’re the new kids on the block, but we have the most experienced team in the industry. My sales and product specialists have been working in watermelons for most of their careers. For our customers, that translates to more than 55 years of experience and dedication,” said Jorgensen.
“The FWA provides exceptional connectivity with key growers and brokers in our industry, which presents an invaluable opportunity to understand where the market is going. While helping us to maximize the reach of our current assortment, our interactions within the FWA enhance the vision for our pipeline of specialty products. We look forward to ongoing involvement in the association, particularly as we address the next big frontier of retail marketed specialty watermelons,” said Jorgensen.
Jorgensen and his family live in Bradenton, FL. When not in the field, Jorgensen is mostly likely to be found on the water, kayak fishing around the mangroves for snook, red fish or spotted trout. Looking ahead, Jorgensen will also enjoy a return to global travel, with Costa Rica as a favorite destination.
