Member Spotlight: Carr Hussey

Carr Hussey has been a figure in the watermelon business since 1977 when he founded J.R. Sales, Inc. While at J.R. Sales, he worked hard to supply stores along the east coast with quality produce. One day over lunch in 2007, Hussey and two friends and customers, George Melshenker and Paul Nuzzo, decided to open their own grower/shipper operation and Sweet Mama Produce was born.

They partner with watermelon farms and sell their crop to chain stores across the United States and into Canada.

Since then, Hussey and his team work hard to maintain their core values: be fair and honest, do more with less, be courageous, focus on the customer, be passionate and positive, teamwork makes the dream work and have fun.

Hussey has been a member of the Florida Watermelon Association, FWA, and has spent 2019 serving as the FWA president.

“Being a member of FWA allows you to do many things to promote watermelons and fund research,” said Hussey. “It also gives you the pleasure of meeting and working with the best people in the industry.”

Hussey and his wife, Jane, have been married for 57 years. His son Dan and daughter-in-law, Melissa, have both worked in the family business for 35 years.
