February President's Message

The weeks leading up to the first Florida watermelon harvest have always felt the most challenging. So many variables seem out of our control but with a little help from above I pray we are headed into one of the best watermelon seasons. I specifically hope the growers impacted by the freeze at the end of January made it through with minimal damage and delays.

At the last meeting of the Florida Watermelon Association Board we decided to focus primarily on two areas of importance: research and promotion. One of the biggest recurring challenges to our industry is the whitefly epidemic. As it impacts all growers throughout the state, our research goal is to make some headway on how to mitigate this issue. Our promotion goal includes the implementation of new marketing opportunities to better promote our delicious Florida Watermelons.

Mark your calendars for November 3-5, 2022 for this year’s convention at The Vinoy in St. Petersburg, FL. We are looking forward to a fun and beneficial convention.

Hoping the 2022 Florida Watermelon season is successful for all.
